This and the following three images clearly reveal the awesome power of gigantic
ocean swells as they pound the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse on November 6, 2009.
The top of this old abandoned lighthouse is 163 feet above the ocean. A refuge
for the protected Comorants that breed there, these waves caused them to take
flight as each swell hit the western flank of the 'rock'. The images were taken
with my full 1120mm telephoto capability, some 3 miles from me at Indian Beach
The shoreline 'pockets' that trap the incoming waves, cause eruptions of water
and spray during rough weather at Indian Beach on November 11, 2009. Look
carefully at the lighthouse in the background, as a wave is beginning to break
there as well.
Heavy winds and rough seas cause enormous 20 foot waves near the North Head
Lighthouse near Ilwaco, Washington (northwest of Astoria, Oregon) in this and
